Fraser Health offers a diverse range of acute and community mental health and addictions services within a recovery-oriented system of care. It contracts with community agencies to provide services that complete and complement its services. These range from acute inpatient care, individual counselling, group therapy, community residential, and early intervention and prevention programs - with specialized services for populations such as youths, seniors, dually diagnosed clients, concurrent disorders and specific cultural groups.
We currently have several opportunities in Psychiatry in hospital and community settings, in Adult, Child and Youth/Adolescent; Addictions and Detox care, in financially strong fee-for-service settings. Each geographic area boasts a cohesive medical community with an integrated multi-disciplinary hospital and community mental health and addictions program and active psychiatric leadership. Opportunities for Child and Adolescent Psychiatrists
There are currently opportunities for child and adolescent psychiatrists to practice in the communities of Surrey and Abbotsford. The Surrey Memorial Hospital campus houses a 10 bed regional Adolescent Psychiatric Unit, an Adolescent Day Treatment Program and Adolescent Crisis Response Program. The new hospital in Abbotsford - Abbotsford Regional Hospital and Cancer Care Centre - has a 5 bed Adolescent Psychiatric Unit and Adolescent Crisis Response Program. Both Surrey and Abbotsford also offer Early Psychosis Intervention Programs.
Responsibilities include supervising residents and medical students, and clinically related teaching services, including educational consultation and input to the multidisciplinary team and assistance in providing educational programs for medical staff and students. Also includes participation in the evaluation of the efficiency, quality and delivery of services, and as appropriate program and service development consultation, and clinical research activities.
Surrey Memorial Hospital/Surrey Mental Health and Addictions
Adolescent Inpatient Unit, Adolescent Crisis Response, Community Mental Health
As a member of multi-disciplinary teams, provide a high standard of care to adolescents and their families in an inpatient psychiatric unit, and children, adolescents and families in community mental health settings. Services include assessment, in and out patient treatment and consultation, family meetings, case conferences, discharge planning, consultation and collaboration with other Physicians and multidisciplinary teams. The psychiatrist will also promote continuity of care by maintaining good working relationships with all those providing care and services and advocating for the psychiatric needs of individual patients.
Tri-cities Mental Health and Addictions
Youth Crisis Response, Youth Day Treatment, Community Mental Health
As a member of multi-disciplinary teams, provide a high standard of care to children, adolescents and families in community mental health settings. Abbotsford and Mission Mental Health & Addictions Services
Abbotsford is 70 km east of Vancouver (right off Highway 1) and Mission is 20 minutes north of Abbotsford. this local service delivery area has a combined population of approximately 180,000 (Abbotsford - 140,000 / Mission - 40,000) with four key service sites: MSA General Hospital, CRESST, Abbotsford Mental Health Centre and Mission Mental heatlh Centre. The MSA General Hospital is a designed facility and the Psychiatric Unit has 20 in-patient beds in total. The hospital also offer an ou-patient program. The is a Psychiatric Liaison Nurse, Emergency Mental Health & Adolescent Crisis Response programs to support the service of in-patient Psychiatry.
The new hospital - Abbotsford Regional Hospital and Cancer Centre - is scheduled to open in late August. At the new hospital site, Psychiatric Service will be more than doubled with 30 beds for the General Psychiatric Unit, 4 beds for Psychiatric Intensive Care and 6 beds for Adolescent Unit. In addition, the Emergency Room will have a dedicated Clinical Decision Unit for Psychiatry - 2 rooms and 4 stretcher bays.
CRESST is a non-designated crisis centre at short distance from the hospital. It is a 10-bed facility with 24-hour staffing and psychiatrist coverage.
Both Mental Health Centres in Abbotsford and Mission provide a fairly comprehensive community mental health services including short term assessment and treatment, community support service, community residential and psychogeriatrics services.
In additional, MH Services also provides funding to support various rehab and recovery programs such as Club House and vocation training.
Addictions Services is primarily out-sources and the portfolio works closely with local service agencies to provide the needed service via a service contract.
Abbotsford and Mission area has the capacity to support two general psychiatrists, one child psychiatrist and one addictions specialist.
Burnaby
There are currently opportunities with Burnaby Mental Health Services and Burnaby Hospital department of Psychiatry for two general psychiatrists. Expertise and skills in dealing with community mental health team patients, inpatients, EPI clients, geriatrics, ECT and consultation Liaison will be an asset. However, we will be open to adjust the role to meet the mutual needs. You will be joining a team of 10 psychiatrists with reasonable on-call of 1 in 12 with full complement of physicians.
Burnaby Hospital is General Hospital serving population of about 250,000. The mental health system is well developed with 28 inpatient beds, community mental health and addiction teams integrated with other components such as in-patient, day programs, residential facilities and CRESST - in Fraser Health wide network of services. UBC clinical faculty appointments are encouraged.
Burnaby is little "hidden gem" next to Vancouver, with a very easy and short commute from Vancouver, Vancouver downtown, UBC, and major recreational places for all seasons. The City of Burnaby is home to Simon Fraser University, active cultural life at Shadbolt centre, Soccer Stadium, wonderful, scenic hiking trails and bicycle trails. It includes all ethno cultural communities, restaurants, shopping centers and it also has good network of highways and transportation.

Chilliwack
Vacancies exist for one general psychiatrist, one paediatric & one geriatric psychiatrist (or general psychiatrists with interests in paediatrics or geriatrics). You will be joining a team of 5 psychiatrists based at Chilliwack hospital and the adjacent mental health centre. Chilliwack has long been a teaching centre for the UBC family practice residency program and more recently the UBC undergraduate program. Psychiatry is part of their rotation and teaching is supported & encouraged. We are proud of our integrated, team orientated approach to care. Community Family doctors are very much involved in hospital care. They are supportive of, and welcoming to their psychiatrist colleagues. We have one of the first shared care programs in the province. A recent hospital addition is a withdrawal management unit. Psychiatrists with an interest in addiction medicine are also welcomed.
Chilliwack is nestled at the end of the Fraser valley, only 60 miles from Vancouver. The population of close to 90,000 is growing quickly. Cultural & recreation facilities are first class. The progressive and innovative city administration has health & social issues working groups, on which we sit. Schools are excellent & houses cheaper here. Delta
We are seeking adult and geriatric psychiatrists to support the Delta Community Mental Health Centres, to provide Shared Care and to provide Urgent Care at Delta Hospital. You would be joining a team of four psychiatrists and three GPP's.
The community of Delta, population 105,000, is comprised of three main residential areas, North Delta, Ladner and Tsawwassen and is a blend of residential, rural and seaside communities. Located just 20 km from Vancouver, it is easily accessible for commuters.
Maple Ridge
A great private practice opportunity with an excellent referral base. Suitable for one who is looking for a limited degree of Inpatient work and ER consultation. The consultant Psychiatrist would have an interest in assisting with development of the Child and Adolescent Services in our community as there are no inpatient child or adolescent beds, utilizing services in Vancouver and Surrey. Patients 16yrs and over can be admitted to the adult unit.
You would be joining a community with 7 psychiatrists, 3 of whom are working part time. The community currently only has the services of a Child Psychiatrist one day a week at the Child and Youth Mental Health Centre which is run by the Ministry of Child and Family Development. We have access to an excellent EPI program in our larger health area. Maple Ridge/Pitt Meadows are communities 45 km from Vancouver, serving a rapidly growing area population of 90,000.
Surrey
There are currently opportunities in Surrey for Adult and Geriatric Psychiatrists. You will be joining a team of 10 psychiatrists and will be invited to provide support to the call-group for Inpatient psychiatry at Surrey Memorial Hospital or to provide consultation to the acute medical services at SMH or to provide support to the Community Mental Health and Addictions Team.
Surrey Memorial Hospital has 45 Inpatient psychiatry beds and is affiliated with UBC as a teaching hospital. Plans are currently underway for the expansion of the Emergency Department to include a designated Crisis Response Unit for psychiatric patients. The community of Surrey is one of the largest and fastest growing communities in British Columbia, with a population of 350,000. Surrey offers a unique blend of rural and urban characteristics and is an easy commute to Vancouver and adjacent communities.
White Rock / South Surrey
We require a Geriatric Psychiatrist for the community of White Rock/South Surrey. Working with a team of eight psychiatrists, you would support the psychiatric call-group for Peace Arch Hospital as well as the Community Mental Health Centre Geriatric Psychiatry team. Peace Arch Hospital has eleven dedicated inpatient psychiatry beds and is affiliated with U.B.C. as a teaching hospital.
White Rock/South Surrey, with a population of 82,000 is located in the southwest corner of the lower mainland, and is a picturesque seaside community built around an eight kilometre stretch of sandy beach overlooking Semiahmoo Bay. The community is easily accessed from Vancouver and adjacent suburbs.
