British Columbia Implements a New Model of Mental Health Care The Province of British Columbia is breaking new ground with its innovative, decentralized model for mental health care. Based on a best practice standard that includes replacing large tertiary institutions with smaller, more home-like facilities, 800 beds at Riverview Hospital are currently being phased out as patients transfer into new specialized, community-based facilities. The goal of this visionary initiative is to improve access to specialized mental health care by increasing system capacity and reducing the patient's and their families need for travel with in the province. As a Psychiatrist within one of BC’s Tertiary Psychiatry Programs, you will be empowered with the ability to steer the implementation of our exciting Provincial mental health model. You will be a driving force and play in integral part in positively impacting the lives of our patients and shaping the future direction of our mental health services in your choice of settings from urban to rural community facilities. BC's Health Authorities are working collaboratively to develop these new tertiary level mental health beds, and there is a total of 389 replacement beds already in service. This means that some BC patients have already begun to benefit from these smaller, more personalized health care settings and the positive impact that comes from being closer to family and friends. Health Match BC is a collaborative partner with the Psychiatry in BC recruitment initiative in supporting Psychiatrists by assisting in providing information regarding the province of BC, facilitation of the referral process, and providing extensive information on Physician licensure and immigration.
